An iterative procedure must be used for the computer solution to permit the computer to make calculations for repeated possibilities until the minimum objective function C is attained. In this case, there are four variables (VA, VB, Vw> and 5) and three nonzero constraints (total volume, final alcohol content, and VA = 10 + S). Because the number of real variables cannot exceed the number of nonzero constraints, one of the four variables must be zero. Thus, one approach for a computer solution merely involves solving a four-by-three matrix with each variable alternatively being set equal to zero, followed by instruction that the desired combination is the one giving the least total cost. 

Direct interstitial infusion has been applied to the treatment of patients with advanced Parkinson s disease, and the design of the protocol is instructive (29). Motor control is severely compromised in these patients because degradation of the substantia nigra ultimately results in massive overinhibition of the motor cortex by the globus pallidus interna (Gpi). One therapeutic approach is to thermally ablate a portion of the Gpi to reduce this inhibition and restore freedom of movement. However, thermal ablation also risks destroying the optic nerve that forms the floor of the Gpi structure. Hence, a chemical means of destroying the Gpi has been evaluated as a potentially more selective alternative. 

Alternatively one can modify the references to these parameters in the computation of Ycak (E. J. Billo, Excel for Chemists, A Comprehensive Guide, Wiley-VCH 1997 pp. 297-299). However, when ycaic refers to these parameters indirectly, through intermediate parameters, this can yield incorrect results, e.g., when we instruct Solver to vary pKa while we first compute Ka = 10A-pKa in a separate cell, and then refer to that cell in the computation of Ycak. The problem will disappear by designating the cell containing Ka as the variable instead, but the approach taken here simply avoids this unnecessary complication. 

A comparison of the outcomes of this approach to single-cell protein synthesis kinetics determination with the alternative method which has been widely used in many previous studies of cell cycle and cell kinetic behavior of many organisms is instructive. The synthesis of the substituted benzophenone shown below provides an instructive example of what we are trying to do. In principle, it could be synthesized by several possible pathways. However, if one asked any group of organic chemists how to make this compound, the Friedel-Crafts pathway would be suggested as the first choice by almost everyone. This speaks to the conceptual redirection that needs to be made if pollution prevention is to be successful. The dominant research approach used in the study was a qualitative one. The initial piloted survey was crafted as a free-response instrument. The analysis of this data drove the development of the CCI. It allowed the researchers to develop a multiple-choice instrument where the answer choices reflected the students alternate conceptions. The qualitative analysis flowed into and shaped the quantitative data collection. The CCI was given to first semester general chemistry students at the beginning and end of the course. The quantitative analysis of the results allowed Mulford and Robinson to explore the extent of student misconceptions and their robustness after a semester of instruction.
