Oulu Regional Institute of Occupational Health carried out a questionnaire-based survey accompanied by health check ups performed by a nurse in 1986 and 1988 in northern Finland (Nayha and Hassi 1993). In 1986, altogether 2705 (73%) of 3720 male reindeer herders participated in the survey. The material in the study consisted of all Finnish reindeer herders participating to herding more than 1 h per year. The mean age of the respondents was 42.9 years. Overall, 34% of respondents were full-time and 62% part-time reindeer herders. Overall 17% of them were Lapps. [Pg.1086]
