With the discovery of the crowns and related species, it was inevitable that a search would begin for simpler and simpler relatives which might be useful in similar applications. Perhaps these compounds would be easier and more economical to prepare and ultimately, of course, better in one respect or another than the molecules which inspired the research. In particular, the collateral developments of crown ether chemistry and phase transfer catalysis fostered an interest in utilizing the readily available polyethylene glycol mono- or dimethyl ethers as catalysts for such reactions. Although there is considerable literature in this area, much of it relates to the use of simple polyethylene glycols in phase transfer processes. The similarities of above experimental results inspired us to investigate the role of SE in heterogeneous catalytic enantioselective hydrogenation reactions. In heterogeneous catalytic reaction the SE means that a given template molecule interacts with the prochiral substrate in the liquid phase in such a way that one of the prochiral sites is preferentially shielded. If the substrate is shielded then its adsorption onto the metal can take place with its unshielded site resulting in ED. [Pg.243]

An explanation of these observations was attempted in terms of the existence of different states/compartmentalisation inspired by the model proposed by Zimmerman and Brittin,15 suggesting that a spin system can be made up of a fixed number of phases with each phase characterised by an inherent relaxation rate. The solid-phase synthesis of dendritic polyamides was explored by Frechet et al. [49]. Inspired by the technique used by Merrifield for peptide synthesis, the same strategy was used to build hyperbranched polyamides onto a polymeric support. The idea was to ensure the preservation of the focal point and to ease the purification between successive steps. The resulting polymers were cleaved from the solid support, allowing ordinary polymer characterization. The reaction was found to be extremely sluggish beyond the fourth generation. [Pg.8]
