Ensure safe system of work provided, taking account of prevailing conditions including weather, traffic and existing structures. Provide suitable PPE as required and ensure its correct use. Inspect excavations daily or before each shift. Record thorough examination. Ensure personnel selected are capable, fit and experienced unless under direct supervision. COSHH assessments are to be made of substances likely to be found or produced during the work. 

Remediation activities at American Thermostat included the excavation and thermal treatment of over 13,000 cubic yards of soil and sediments contaminated primarily with perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, and solvents. The soil was excavated and treated using a thermal treatment unit called the low-temperature enhanced volatilization facility (LTEVF). The performance test for the site s thermal unit had just been completed at the time of the inspection, so there was limited activity.

X 2.3 m. Inspection was conducted in pile No. 9 (P9) of 1.2 m diameter and 28.9 m length located at a comer of the footing as illustrated in Fig. 14.2. Induced AE waves due to shaking a heavily machinery were directly monitored by AE sensors placed on internal wall of a borehole P9 excavated in the pile.
