Grounding, inspection

The Forest Service denied logging in this case based on aerial photography of the area, which showed some old trees supposedly suitable for spotted owl nests. However, they made no attempt to verify their findings through a ground inspection. A private contractor and another government agency reviewed the Forest Service s analysis. Both found it unreliable.

Vessels are sometimes contaminated by material left over from a previous use. For example, tank trucks were filled with a waste sludge containing particles of aluminum. One day the tank truck contained some caustic soda left over from the previous load. The caustic soda reacted with the aluminum, producing hydrogen. The increase in pressure blew open an inspection port and knocked an operator onto the ground. 

The ability of consumers to voluntarily pay a premium to purchase environmentally preferred electric generation would seem to be a happy middle ground between free-market energy proponents and clean energy advocates. Yet, on closer inspection there are...
