Inspection fastening

Fully Adhered. The substrate, ie, insulation, cover board, etc, that the single-ply membrane is to be attached to is either fuUy adhered or mechanically fastened to the deck. However, there are also appHcations where the membrane is adhered directly to the deck. The membrane is then adhered to the substrate. The typical method for adhering the membrane to the substrate is by applying a contact adhesive to the membrane and substrate, rolling the membrane into place, and brooming once the adhesive is ready. There are one-sided appHcations where the membrane is roUed directly into the adhesive that has been appHed to the substrate only. The membrane used in this appHcation method may be fleece-backed. FuUy adhered systems can be installed on any slope. The fuUy adhered appHcation offers a smooth surface that is easy to maintain and inspect, as weU as exceUent wind resistance on account of positive attachment. [Pg.212]

Local repair of delamination originally caused by non-durable surface treatment is only temporarily successful at best. The surface treatment on the unrepaired portion of the assembly remains susceptible to attack and the area of delamination will likely continue to grow once the assembly is put back into service and exposed to moist conditions. Replacement or complete remanufacture of the component is the only way to permanently address this type of damage. However, time-limited repairs using bonded or mechanical methods can be used to extend the life of the component until a major overhaul is scheduled. In some cases such as widespread disbond of fuselage doublers, mechanical repairs (rivets and fastened doublers) and continued inspection are used to extend the life of the skin indefinitely because of the high cost of replacement. [Pg.1173]

Failure Investigation. The clamp was nonmagnetic and the stamped identification on the side of the U-shaped shells indicated that they were fabricated from forged 304 austenitic stainless steel. Visual examination of the fracture surfaces revealed they were entirely brittle and exhibited a very coarse fracture morphology. Liquid penetrant inspection revealed the presence of additional cracks in the fractured half of the clamp. There was no cracking present in the high-strength steel fasteners. [Pg.498]

Very small items produced and tested at very high rates (e.g., fasteners, microcircirit chips) can be handled by vibratory bowl feeders, slides, and small conveyors to ensure that they are correctly presented to the inspection device. The LOTO procedure must contain clear instructions covering procedures for re-energizing machines and equipment after completion of maintenance or repairs. The equipment must be inspected to verify that components are properly fastened and jumpers or grounds, if applied, are removed. Even though adhesively bonded composite joints have a number of advantages over conventional mechanical fastening, they have some drawbacks too.
