INSIGHT INTO Polymers

The presence of four kinds of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) observable nuclei ( H, uB, 13C, and 29Si) allows poly(m-carborane-siloxane) to be readily investigated using NMR spectroscopy. In addition, H spin-echo NMR relaxation techniques can provide an insight into polymer segmental chain dynamics and therefore useful information on material viscoelastic characteristics. [Pg.105]

The physico-chemical changes induced in polymers following exposure to radiation can be studied by a range of spectroscopic techniques. Recent developments in instrumentation and data analysis procedures in electronic, vibrational and magnetic resonance spectroscopies have provided considerable new insights into polymer structure and behaviour. The application of these spectroscopic methods in polymer studies are reviewed with emphasis on their utility in investigations of radiation effects on macromolecules. [Pg.27]

The variety of spectroscopic methods now available can be used to provide considerable information on radiation effects on polymeric materials. These applications are summarized in Table I. Improvements in instrumentation and data analysis procedures are continuing and the development of new spectroscopic techniques promise new insights into polymer structure and behaviour. [Pg.41]

These and other facets of the poly(propylene) data as well as similar data for PMMA are discussed with respect to their implications for insight into polymer chain dynamics in the solid state. [Pg.83]

Robert Simha was one of the pioneers of polymer science. He has left his imprint throughout the field in his theoretical work, his unique insight into polymer physics, his advice, and his friendship. His ideas will live on and his work will provide a foundation for the next generations of polymer scientists, but his warmth and friendship are sorely missed by all who knew him. [Pg.11]

The determination of /x, for polymer liquids is most commonly obtained by capillary flow (see Figure 7.8). We examine capillary flow for this reason and because it will provide insight into polymer liquid flow in the other cross-sections used in processing. [Pg.306]

Although insight into polymer crystallinity is not completely satisfactory, there are certain factors affecting it that are generally known and recognized. For example, the effect of such parameters as branching, stereoisomerism (tac-... [Pg.32]

Next, methods have to be used that make use of these varied sources in such a way as to produce meaningful and correct designs, proper understanding of operations, and real insight into polymer processing. The sections that follow will, it is hoped, accomplish these goals. [Pg.118]

A powerful insight into polymer chain conformations is an analogy with the diffusion equation. When polymers are subject to complex geometric constraints, the conformational free energy can sometimes be found as a solution of a diffusion equation. [Pg.634]
