Names used in this cumulative Subject Index for Volumes XVI and XVII, as well as in the text, are based for the most part upon Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, Definitive Rules 1970 Report of the Commission on the Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Butterworths, London, 1971 [see Pure Appl. Chem. 27(1), 1-110] also on the Tentative Rules of Organic Chemistry—Section D and Nomenclature of Inorganic Boron Compounds [Commission on Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, IUPAC, published in Pure Appl. Chem. 30(3 -4), 683 - 710 (1972)]. All of these rules have been approved by the ACS Committee on Nomenclature. Conformity with approved organic usage is also one of the aims of the nomenclature used here.

An additional problem with oxidation number assignments of nitrosyl compounds is the fact that the International Union of Pute and Applied Chemistry has recommended that NO should be viewed as a neutral ligand, analogous to CO See International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, Definitive Rules (2" Edition) Section 7.323.

When a Br nsted base functions catalytically by sharing an electron pair with a proton, it is acting as a general base catalyst, but when it shares the electron with an atom other than the proton it is (by definition) acting as a nucleophile. This other atom (electrophilic site) is usually carbon, but in organic chemistry it might also be, for example, phosphorus or silicon, whereas in inorganic chemistry it could be the central metal ion in a coordination complex. The second edition of the well-known Red Book, the definitive recommendations of the lUPAC Commission on Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, appeared in Pure Appl. Chem., 28, 1-110 (1971). It is also available separately as a hard-bound reprint. In this edition, the rules for naming organometallic compounds have been completely revised and extended, with introduction of the rj nomenclature for organic ligands. 

Each manuscript should be submitted in duplicate to the secretary of the Editorial Board, Professor Stanley Kirschner, Department of Chemistry, Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan 48202, U.S.A. The manuscript should be typewritten in English. Nomenclature should be consistent and should follow the recommendations presented in The Definitive Rules for Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 82, 5523 (1960). Abbreviations should conform to those used in publications of the American Chemical Society, particularly Inorganic Chemistry. 

That branch of chemistry which deals with the compounds of the element carbon the simpler carbon-containing compounds (such as calcium carbonate) are usually classed with inorganic chemistry and an alternative definition of organic chemistry is the chemistry of the hydrocarbons and their compounds. 

Perhaps the greatest area in which the Lewis acid-base approach is most useful is that of coordination chemistry. In the formation of coordination compounds, Lewis acids such as Cr3+, Co3+, Pt2+, or Ag+ bind to a certain number (usually 2, 4, or 6) of groups as a result of electron pair donation and acceptance. Typical electron pair donors include H20, NH3, F , CN , and many other molecules and ions. The products, known as coordination compounds or coordination complexes, have definite structures that are predictable in terms of principles of bonding. Because of the importance of this area of inorganic chemistry, Chapters 16 through 22 in this book are devoted to coordination chemistry.

In order to present clear concepts it is necessary that idealized definitions be adopted but it is reeognized that the realities of polymer science must be faced. Deviations from ideality arise with polymers at both molecular and bulk levels in ways that have no parallel with the ordinary small molecules of organic or inorganic chemistry. Although such deviations are not explicitly taken into account in the definitions below, the terms recommended can usefully be applied to the predominant structural features of real polymer molecules, if necessary with self-explanatory, if imprecise, qualifications such as essentially. , almost completely. , or highly. . Although such expressions lack the rigour beloved by the purist, every experienced polymer scientist knows that communication in this discipline is impossible without them. 

This document provides definitions of the terms most commonly used in relation to sol-gel processing and ceramization. It embraces all categories of materials and their processing. The definitions result from the efforts of a working party drawn from the membership of the lUPAC Polymer and Inorganic Chemistry Divisions. 

At its inception, Emeleus and Sharpe adopted what they described as a broad definition of inorganic chemistry. As they indicated, the subject depends very much for its existence on the application of physical and physicochemical principles to chemical phenomena. One of their aims was the integration of structural, kinetic, and thermodynamic data with descriptive chemistry. All this and more has, I am quite sure, been achieved. Inorganic chemistry has certainly not become any less broad over the intervening years.
