Lithography. Of the principal printing processes, Hthography is by far the most widely used. But in spite of usage and the numerous studies (60) to which Hthography has been subject over many years, the mechanism of the process is not well understood. Ink is transferred to the test strip from an inked plate at an exactly specified plate pressure and a defined constant speed, and subsequently spHt three times by an offset rubber blanket-covered cyhnder. If the coating on the paper is unevenly distributed, the printed image may appear cloudy as a result. The inhomogeneity of the printed image is either ranked visually or with a mottle tester (which measures fluctuations in color density). [Pg.99]

Fluidyibsorbamy. Fluids like ink penetrate into paper during the printing process. The further the ink penetrates, the less glossy the print. The degree of penetration in paper is generally a function of the paper porosity and wettabiUty by the fluid. It can be controlled by the particle size, shape, and chemical nature of the filler or filler surface. In particular, plate-like fillers, such as clays, tend to produce the best fluid holdout because they tend to overlap and reduce the porosity at the paper surface (see Inks). [Pg.370]

Letterpress. This is the oldest printing process stiU in use. It continues to be replaced by newer printing processes. Printing is conducted from a raised image area of the printing plate. Inks in the printing process are transferred directly from a raised area to a substrate. The printing plates contain a thick layer of photopolymer (often a mixture with polymer such as poly(vinyl alcohol) deposited over a plastic or aluminum base. [Pg.249]

Electronic Applications. The PGMs have a number of important and diverse appHcations in the electronics industry (30). The most widely used are palladium and mthenium. Palladium or palladium—silver thick-film pastes are used in multilayer ceramic capacitors and conductor inks for hybrid integrated circuits (qv). In multilayer ceramic capacitors, the termination electrodes are silver or a silver-rich Pd—Ag alloy. The internal electrodes use a palladium-rich Pd—Ag alloy. Palladium salts are increasingly used to plate edge connectors and lead frames of semiconductors (qv), as a cost-effective alternative to gold. In 1994, 45% of total mthenium demand was for use in mthenium oxide resistor pastes (see Electrical connectors). [Pg.173]

Electronic Film Output. Imagesetters are precision electromechanical devices that image monochromatic color separations onto photographic film or paper. Each separation is used to expose a printing plate for a single ink color (4). [Pg.37]
