Injection mold design

The injection mold serves two basic functions. First, it forms an air pocket into which the melted plastic material is injected under high pressure. Second, it acts as a heat exchanger, removing heat from the molten plastic to solidify the part [2].

The die must be designed to control the pressure drop rate, which controls the uniformity of cell size. The desired pressure drop rate is greater than 1 GP/s. It also removes the thermal energy from the molded part. The die also creates 3-D shapes in the case of injection molding or the profile in the case of extrusion. It can be seen that the die design is as important as the extruder or the injection-molding design.

MID was the technology of choice on account of the challenging three-dimensional design requirements. Even though it had to satisfy a raft of regulatory requirements, the HF antenna structure was developed within a matter of weeks. LDS technology was used in the early phase of development so that layout adaptations could be incorporated quickly. Once RF capability had been verified, the LDS structure was transferred to a two-shot injection-mold design for a fast ramp-up to series production.
