Partnership initiatives

The SWISS-PROT database [36] release 40.44 (February, 2003) contains over 120 000 sequences of proteins with more than 44 million amino adds abstracted from about 100 000 references. Besides sequence data, bibHographical references, and taxonomy data, there are highly valuable annotations of information (e.g., protein function), a minimal level of redundancy, and a high level of integration with other databases (EMBL, PDB, PIR, etc.). The database was initiated in 1987 by a partnership between the Department of Medicinal Biochemistry of the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and the EMBL. Now SWISS-PROT is driven as a joint project of the EMBL and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB). 

Supplier partnerships or alliances have been used to control the cost of procurement. They are based on methods developed in Japan, initially in the automobile industry. These methods have been extended into the process industry and for the purchase of such items as compressor trains. Generally as originally conceived, they were intended mainly for commodity items. By using some innovative approaches, the concept of partnerships or alliances has been extended into the purchase of custom equipment. 

Under the Clinton administration, the FCCSET Committee has become the National Science and Technology Committee (NSTC). The AMPP no longer exists as a stand-alone initiative, but its components have been folded into specific programs such as the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (the clean car initiative). 

Materials chemistry proposals were jointly reviewed and split-funded, and in 1987 and 1988, 33 cooperative research projects were initiated. In 1989, the partnership was expanded to include the Division of Chemical and Thermal Systems (NSFs home for chemical engineering), and the program was renamed Materials Chemistry and Chemical Processing (MCCP). In 1989, 1990, and 1991, each of the three participating NSF divisions invested about three-quarters of a million dollars in additional... 

The importance of education and training was also noticed by the International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy (IPHE), initiated in 2003 by the United States to co-ordinate research activities and to accelerate the transition to a hydrogen economy (see also Chapter 8). A 320-kilowatt hybrid system is also in the planning stages. An initial commercial offering of a one MW fuel cell-microturbine power plant in late 2002 will be the end results of this Department of Energy/Siemens Westinghouse partnership program (70).
