Testing of ceramic composites has been around since the earliest fabrication of these materials. For particulate- and whisker-reinforced composites, testing methods which are suitable for monolithic ceramics are generally used. These methods include three- and four-point flexure, uniaxial tension and compression, and many others. For fiber-reinforced ceramic composites, flexural testing was also used initially. One major difference between multicomponent systems such as mixture I or III (Table 6) and one-component systems is the fact that the irradiated regions in the former, although presumably higher in density, have lower refractive indices than the initially dark areas. The product of the reaction between the pol3nner and ammonia was not stable. The surface composition, described above, was measured by XPS on a sample immediately after preparation. After exposure to air at ambient temperature for one hour the surface nitrogen concentration had declined from 10 to 8 atom %.
