Specific cases are categorized as temporary partial, temporary total, permanent partial, or permanent total. Other categories of benefits include retraining incentive benefits for employees who may have specific injuries. These benefits are paid for a limited period of time to aid the injured in pursuing additional education or training. Vocational rehabilitation services may be offered to employees who are eligible for permanent total disability benefits and actively participate in a vocational rehabilitation program. A further classification in which medically applied robots come into contact with people, is in their role as powered manipulators which assist the disabled in rehabilitation. Potential locations for the manipulator, relative to the patient, may range from no contact to full contact with the user. The former emulates the industrial set up, so that the medical manipulator is part of a workstation with an envelope of reach which is always out of contact with the user and public and thus potential safety problems are largely avoided. In this application the robot can only place items onto, eg a rotary table, from which the user can then take them. Unfmtunately, although potentially a very safe solution, it is also most limited in its benefits to the user. Also, it will be necessary to fence off the manipulator arm, away frnn both he iers and the public. [Pg.61]
