Indoles ring synthesis

Pyrrole rings frequently serve as precursors to indole rings [37] and PdCl2 induces the oxidative cyclization of pyrrole 37 to a mixture of 38 and 39 [38]. Since the oxidation of tetrahydroindoles to indoles, such as 38 to 39, is usually straightforward, this transformation can be viewed as a novel and efficient indole ring synthesis. 

Hegedus also described an efficient synthesis of 4-bromoindoIe (10) and 4-bromo-l-(4-toluenesulfonyl)indole (11) starting from 2-amino-6-nitrotoluene (9) [20]. The synthesis is lengthy but yields are good, and the method involves the Hegedus indole ring synthesis discussed later in this chapter.

Fukuyama devised a novel tin-mediated indole ring synthesis leading directly to 2-stannylindoles that can capture aryl and alkyl halides in a Pd-catalyzed crosscoupling termination reaction [110-112]. The presumed pathway is illustrated and involves initial tributylstannyl radical addition to the isonitrile 65, cyclization, and final formation of stannylindole 66.
