Publications of this kind are described as non-original. They are abstracting services and handbooks that catch the primary literature, condense the important contents, and make this information available (searchable). Secondary literature is not evaluated and is provided in both printable and electronic forms. Examples are Gmelin, Beilstein, Citations Chemisches Zentralblatt, Chemical Abstracts, or Science Citation Index handbooks include Houben-Weyl, and Landolt Bomstein. 

Alumina Trihydrate. Alumina trihydrate is usually used as a secondary flame retardant in flexible PVC because of the high concentration needed to be effective. As a general rule the oxygen index of flexible poly(vinyl chloride) increases 1% for every 10% of alumina trihydrate added. The effect of alumina trihydrate on a flexible poly(vinyl chloride) formulation containing antimony oxide is shown in Figure 5. 

Index entries are divided into two categories, primary and secondary. Primary index entries are used when a significant part of the text is devoted to a particular ring system this may be a whole chapter, or a section or subsection. Secondary index entries are used when a heterocyclic system is mentioned in a chapter devoted to another (primary) system. This may be, for example, as a starting material or as a product, or in a discussion comparing properties. 

Journal articles and patents contain virtually all of the original work in organic chemistry. However, if this were all, if there were no indexes, abstracts, review articles, and other secondary sources, the literature would be unusable because it is so vast that no one could hope to find anything in particular. Fortunately, the secondary sources are excellent. There are various kinds and the categories tend to merge. Our classification is somewhat arbitrary. 

The author index is compiled by computer from the lists of references. Thus it tells whose publications are cited and in that respect is comprehensive. It is not a list of authors, beyond those cited in the references, whose results are reported in the text. However, as the references cited are leading ones, consulting them, along with the use of appropriate works of the secondary literature, will rapidly lead to the complete literature related to any particular subject covered. 

Note that contributions from the secondary sector of the eigenvectors, Uf, do not appear in the residues, for the summation index, r, pertains to spin-orbitals only. 

The film thickness and retractive index were calculated using spectroscopic ellipsometry. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used for composition analysis. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) was used to investigate the depth profiles of the film. 

Secondary goals are identification of the index case that infected the patient, identification of all persons infected by both the index case and the new case of TB, and the completion of appropriate treatments for those individuals. 

In a multi-reactant system where no identification of an unstable product was possible, one of the reactants had to be selected as primary reactant to prepare and index the main entry, with the other material(s) as secondary reactant(s). No strictly logical basis of choice for this is obvious. 

However, it emerged dining the compilation phase that most two component reaction hazard systems of this type involve a fairly obvious oxidant material as one of the reactants. Where this situation was recognised, the oxidant has normally been selected as primary (indexing) reactant, with the other as secondary reactant, following the colon.
