Titanium metal is considered to be physiologically inert. When pure, titanium dioxide is relatively clear and has an extremely high index of refraction with an optical dispersion higher than diamond. [Pg.76]

Under physiological conditions, [S] is seldom saturating, and itself is not particularly informative. That is, the in vivo ratio of [S]/A , usually falls in the range of 0.01 to 1.0, so active sites often are not filled with substrate. Nevertheless, we can derive a meaningful index of the efficiency of Michaelis-Menten-type enzymes under these conditions by employing the following equations. As presented in Equation (14.23), if... [Pg.439]

The impact of the root to shoot ratios on calculated maintenance requirements is important because root to shoot ratios are highly variable and almost always underestimate below-ground biomass. Amos and Walters (2006) reported that the net below-ground C deposition in com at physiological maturity was 29% 13% of the shoot biomass (leaves, stems, and husks) in 41 studies. The use of these values is further complicated by the use of different definitions for root to shoot ratio. Converting Amos and Walters (2006) units to units used by Johnson et al. (2006) would reduce the reported values from 0.29 to 0.15 (harvest index 50%). [Pg.210]

The Merck Index, Merck Co., Inc., Rahway, New Jersey.) This handbook is mostly concerned with drugs and their physiological effects. But useful information exists concerning many chemicals. Because of the nature of the listings, I ve had to treat the explanations a bit differently than those for the other handbooks. [Pg.32]

Pildralazine (65), when administered i.v. or orally, displays a high antihypertensive activity in conscious hypertensive animals (rats, dogs). The hypotensive effect, caused by oral doses of 0.1 mg/kg to 1 mg/kg, has been reported to last more than 24 h. The therapeutic index (LD50/ED25 rats oral administration) has been found to be 70-times higher than that of hydralazine due to both higher potency and reduced toxicity [197]. It has been concluded that (65), like hydralazine, acts on peripheral smooth muscle on specific receptors which are physiologically affected by ATP released from... [Pg.154]
