Hplc techniques are used to routinely separate and quantify less volatile compounds. The hplc columns used to affect this separation are selected based on the constituents of interest. They are typically reverse phase or anion exchange in nature. The constituents routinely assayed in this type of analysis are those high in molecular weight or low in volatility. Specific compounds of interest include wood sugars, vanillin, and tannin complexes. The most common types of hplc detectors employed in the analysis of distilled spirits are the refractive index detector and the ultraviolet detector. Additionally, the recent introduction of the photodiode array detector is making a significant impact in the analysis of distilled spirits. 

Other Applications. The refractive index of siUcate or borosiUcate glass can be modified by the addition of cesium oxide, introduced as cesium nitrate or carbonate. Glass surfaces can be made resistant to corrosion or breakage by surface ion exchange with cesium compound melts or solutions. This process can also be used for the production of optical wave guides (61). 

Cost data for shell-and-tube exchangers from 15 sources were correlated and found to be consistent wrien scaled by the Marshall and Swift index [Woods et al., Can. J. Chem. Eng., 54, 469-489 (December 1976)]. 

Costs of shell-and-tube heat exchangers can be estimated from Fig. 11-41 and Tables 11-13 and 11-14. These 1960 costs should be updated by use of the Marshall and Swift Index, which appears in each issue of Chemical Engineering. Note that during periods of high and low demand for heat exchangers the prices in the marketplace may vary significantly from those determined by this method.

An additional complication in the PIMC simulations arises when Bose or Fermi statistics is included in the formalism. The trace in the partition function allows for paths which may end at a particle index which is different from the starting index. In this way larger, closed paths may build up which eventually spread over the entire system. All such possible paths corresponding to the exchange of indistinguishable particles have to be taken into account in the partition function. Here the indices a and b stand for the valence orbitals on the two atoms as before, n is a number operator, c+ and c are creation and annihilation operators, and cr is the spin index. The third and fourth terms in the parentheses effect electron exchange and are responsible for the bonding between the two atoms, while the last two terms stand for the Coulomb repulsion between electrons of opposite spin on the same orbital.
