Before we proceed, let us look more closely at Hume s statement. It implies that the notion of rational desires is meaningless. Reason cannot dictate to the passions what their objects should be. The subjects dealt with in these papers have lost none of their interest or attraction for investigators since our conference was held. The real cause of superconduction still remains a mystery. On the other hand, Heisenberg has quite recently found a method, based on the Thomas-Fermi distribution, for calculating the atom form factor for the incoherent radiation, a method which is just as simple as that previously known for the coherent part of the radiation. Many other problems will suggest themselves to the readers of this book. The work by M. Arndt el al. starts with the description of far-field diffraction experiments with fullerene molecules Cm. Since for larger objects the far-field observations become much more challenging, the authors also study the feasibility of near-field Talbot Lau interferometry with 6Vo. This particular technique allows them to work with a spatially incoherent beam and thus with a much increased count rate.
