Teprotide s capacity to block the in vivo generation of angiotensin II from angiotensin I was demonstrated by its inhibition of the latter s pressor activity when both are given intravenously to rats (87). Teprotide was also shown to lower blood pressure in animal models of hypertension, especially those characterized by high circulating renin levels such as the two-kidney, one-clip rat model of renal hypertension (88). As a rule, within the bioprecursor category of prodrugs, non-redox reactions are infrequent. An example is found in the in vivo generation of L-cysteine from its cyclic thiocarbamate.

The in vivo generation of GSSG and carbon monoxide has also been reported in the blood of mice exposed to haloforms (Anders et al., 1978). The observation of GSSG and CO may be linked to the further metabolism of GSCOSG after generation, but there are no studies that have identified this potential relationship.
