Imports and Costs

Arylamines are generally prepared by the reduction of nitro compounds. When only small quantities are to be reduced and the time element is important and cost is a secondary consideration, tin and hydrochloric acid may be employed, for example ... 

As the familiarity with the system has increased, so has the number of uses which we have found for the information it has yielded. These uses now include sales analysis, and the determination of sales territories warehousing and distribution studies advertising and promotional programs end-use market studies the surveying of competitive products. Information obtained on end uses and competitive products is, in turn, applied in our product development programs which constitute a highly important and costly part of competing in the plastics industry. 

An important and costly portion of this plant is the system for recovery of the spent acid, which flows in dilute form from the base of the alcohol stripping column. Reconcentration of the dilute acid is accomplished in three steps, the first bringing the strength up to 70 per cent in an acid reboiler (see Fig. 7-8), the evaporated steam being returned to the stripping... 

Much of this interest is centered on the possible use of ILs as green alternatives to volatile organic solvents. This claim rests on the fact that ILs are practically nonvolatile under ambient conditions. Hence, the exposure risk to ILs is much lower than it is for a volatile solvent, thus removing one of the most important, and costly to control, vectors for their absorption by the body, particularly important for workers in the chemical industry. The nonvolatility also leads to ILs being nonflammable at ambient, and considerably higher, temperatures [1]. However, there are many potential solvents in existence that meet these criteria but have not been the subject of over 600 research papers in 2003 alone. So, why are ILs of such intense interest ... 

The total cost of each Pareto-optimal water network is also reported in Table 12.2. However, this cannot be the only basis for selecting a particular water network design, as preferences of the decision maker, such as number of interconnections, are important and costs depend on plant location and time. This is illustrated in Table 12.2 using two different fresh water costs (1.0 and 0.38 /t) and two different AF for capital cost (0.1 and 0.2). 

The technical content of this book posed a particular challenge of selection and condensation. Nearly every topic could be expanded into several volumes, and must in practice be covered by specialist engineers with far more knowledge than is presented. The intentions behind the information presented are twofold. Firstly, to include just sufficient information for a generalist (the project engineer) to manage the specialists, or to assist the specialists to co-ordinate with each other and find the best compromises. Secondly, to include some of the author s own experience (spanning some 30 years) of simple but important items which do not seem to be conveniently presented in textbooks or standards, but which can prove important and costly.
