The 14C-labelled 349, the new immunostimulating agent with a peptide-like structure, has been synthesized372 from 350 (equation 182). [35S]-Pidotimod-349 has been prepared372,373,3740 as shown in equation 183, [14C]- and [35S]-349 have been needed to study the pharmacokinetics and metabolism of 349 in immunodeficiencies. 349 increases cell-immediate immune response by stimulation of IL-351 production374 3740.

Since many diseases are associated with cellular immunodeficiency there is an important need for immunostimulants. They have potential use as vaccine adjuvants and for the treatment of cancer, human immunodeficiency viral infections and in certain other infections. The immunostimulating agents are probably best known at this time for their use in the treatment of cancer. When used for this purpose these drugs often act through more than one mechanism. For example, in addition to their ability to augment the immune system, they may have direct cytotoxic effects as well as being able to induce differentiation of the cancer cells.
