Iminodiacetate group

These acids have been investigated in relation to the particular influence of the substituent R on the stability of the metal complexes formed. This is because the tridentate iminodiacetate group ensures a generally quite elevated stability of the complexes formed. Of these ligands nitrilotriacetic acid (nta R = CH2C02H) is the most important because it has found various applications. 

This technique involves the separation of organic compounds on the basis of their ability to act as ligands towards certain metal ions. The metal ions are bound strongly to an ion-exchange resin such as Chelex 100 which has iminodiacetate groups as the active sites. 

In [Pr2(H20)4(C4H6N04)2(C4H5N04)]Cl2,3H20, each hydrogen-iminodiacetate and iminodiacetate group was co-ordinated34 to four Pr3 + ions, thereby giving a three-dimensional network structure. The co-ordination polyhedron around each Pr atom is described as a distorted monocapped square antiprism made up of seven carboxylato O atoms and two water molecules. 

Chelex-100 is a well-known resin based on styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer with iminodiacetate groups. It has found many applications in preconcentration of traces of heavy metals such as Cu, Cd, Zn, Ni, Co, Mn, Fe, Pb, and Hg [169-172].

If the software detects that the resulting peaks are very low, it commands the system to repeat both processes, although with V in Off position in order to preconcentrate Fe(III) in the chelating filter, which contains iminodiacetic groups. Figure 3.7 shows an FIA system for the determination of metals using a column packed with a chelating solid phase (ChelexlOO). Initially, the loop of valve 1 is loaded with an appropriate volume of sample that is then injected into the manifold in order to have metals retained on the chelating column. Simultaneously, the loop of valve 2 is loaded with nitric acid of an appropriate concentration. As the acid is injected onto the column, it protonates the iminodiacetic groups and releases the metals, which are then driven to the detector (e.g. an atomic absorption spectrophotometer).
