In general, many simple mechanical products do not fall under the scope of Directive 94/9/EC as they do not have their own source of ignition (see chapter 3.7.2). Examples without own source of ignition are hand tools such as hammers, spanners, saws and ladders. [Pg.87]

Certain substances on contact with water emit flammable gases in such quantities that explosive mixtures with air will be formed. These kinds of sparks are not directly related to frictional impact. Hand and mechanical tools are the most likely sources of friction sparks that occur outside of equipment. The need for nonsparking tools is somewhat controversial Bodurtha states that it is extremely unlikely that anyone would be using tools in a flammable atmosphere, and it is usually more prudent to control the atmosphere than the tools.
