The ideal, continuously operated stirred tank reactor (CSTR) has the broadest RTD between all reactor types. The most probable residence time for an entering volume element is t = 0. After a mean residence time t = t), 37% of the tracer injected at time t = 0 is still present in the reactor. After five mean residence times, a residue of about 1% still remains in the reactor. Chapter 2 treated multiple and complex reactions in an ideal batch reactor. The reactor was ideal in the sense that mixing was assumed to be instantaneous and complete throughout the vessel. Real batch reactors will approximate ideal behavior when the characteristic time for mixing is short compared with the reaction half-life. Industrial batch reactors have inlet and outlet ports and an agitation system. The same hardware can be converted to continuous operation. To do this, just feed and discharge continuously. If the reactor is well mixed in the batch mode, it is likely to remain so in the continuous mode, as least for the same reaction. The ideal continuous stirred tank reactor is the easiest type of continuous flow reactor to analyze in design calculations because the temperature and composition of the reactor contents are homogeneous throughout the reactor volume. Consequently, material and energy balances can be written over the entire reactor and the outlet composition and temperature can be taken as representative of the reactor contents. In general the temperatures of the feed and effluent streams will not be equal, and it will be necessary to use both material and energy balances and the temperature-dependent form of the reaction rate expression to determine the conditions at which the reactor operates. [Pg.357]

In entrainer sublimation, an entrainer gas is blown into the vaporisation chamber of a sublimer in order to increase the vapour flowrate to the condensing equipment, thereby increasing the yield. Air is the most commonly used entrainer, though superheated steam can be employed for substances such as anthracene that are relatively insoluble in water. If steam is used, the vapour may be cooled and condensed by direct contact with a spray of cold water. Although the recovery of the sublimate is efficient, the product is wet. The use of an entrainer gas in a sublimation process also provides the heat needed for sublimation and an efficient means of temperature control. If necessary, it may also provide dilution for the fractional condensation at the desublimation stage. Entrainer sublimation, whether by gas flow over a static bed of solid particles or through a fluidised bed, is ideally suited to continuous operation. [Pg.881]

An ideal system would enable continuous operation with separation under conditions similar to those of the reaction itself, as a result of which all the catalyst remains in its active state for all times. According to the vendor, a key advantage of the SpinTek system is that the membranes are less likely to foul compared to static membrane systems. This feature results in less downtime for the system. There is a definite need, therefore, for systems that combine the advantages of high activity and selectivity of homogeneous catalysts with the facile recovery and recycling characteristic of their heterogeneous counterparts. This can be achieved by employing a different type of heterogeneous system, namely liquid-liquid biphasic catalysis, whereby the catalyst is dissolved in one liquid phase and the reactants and product(s) are in a second liquid phase. The catalyst is recovered and recycled by simple phase separation. The problem in applying this residence time to field operations ties in that these are continuous operations. They will therefore have a distribution el residence times rather than a single time as in a batch calculation.
