CIC The basic acid taste results from high levels of oxalic and succinic acid. (Z)-3-hexenol and (E)-2-hexenal contribute to the unripe, green aspect and ethyl benzoate with methyl-2-hydroxybenzoate are the typical medicinal notes. Quinoline and ethyl nicotinate add the earthy background.

Several anions have proven to be effective for indirect photometric detection. Figure 6.18 shows an excellent separation of common anions with 2.0 mM potassium phthalate, pH 6.0, with indirect detection at 280 nm. By switching to 4.0 mM p-hydroxybenzoic add, pH 8.5 with 2.5% methanol, detection at 310 nm, and reducing the column length to 10 m, the same anions plus phosphate could be separated in only 2.3 min [24]. 

Thermotropic aromatic copolyester fibers are produced by melt spinning since the combination of an aromatic backbone and flexible segments results in an LCP which can be melt processed. Copolyesters, such as p-hydroxybenzoic add (PHBA) modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), 60/40 PHBA/PET (X7G) polymers, have been produced by the Tennessee Eastman Company [425-427]. Other melt processable nematic thermotropic LCPs (TLCP), based on combinations of 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic add (NDA), 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) and 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNA), and referred to as Vectra LCP resins, have been conunercialized (trademark by Hoechst Celanese Corporation [406]). 

Also known as 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, it is a crystalline carboxylic add and classified as a beta-hydroxy acid. Salicylic acid is slightly soluble in water but very soluble in ethanol and ether (like phenol and resorcinol). It is made from sodium phenolate and this explains its direct relationship with phenol with which it shares certain toxic jjroperties that become apparent when used in great quantity and on large surface areas.
