Hydrotreating Gasoline/Naphtha

Tar Sands Canadian tar sands are strip-mined and extracted with hot water to recover heavy oil (bitumen). The oil is processed into naphtha, kerosene, and gasoline fractions (which are hydrotreated), in addition to gas (which is recovered). Tar sands are being developed in Utah also. 

The bulk of the naphtha was hydrotreated and catalytically reformed over a chlorided Pt/Al203-based catalyst to produce an aromatic motor gasoline. However, the hydrotreated Fischer-Tropsch naphtha is a poor feed for standard catalytic reforming on account of its high linear hydrocarbon content (>75%).37 In order to limit liquid yield loss, typical operation resulted in a reformate with quite low octane value (Table 18.10). Higher octane reformate could be produced, but at the expense of significant liquid yield loss. 

Naphtha to become a suitable component tor blending into finished gasoline pools must be further processed. The octane number will range from 40 to 50. Prior to introduction into a catalytic-reforming unit, most naphtha feedstocks are hydrotreated in the interest of prolonging the life of the reforming catalyst. 

Based on correlations, the naphthas from the shale oil hydrotreater can be readily upgraded to high-octane gasolines by catalytic reforming. The middle distillate fractions will require some additional hydrotreating... 

The next cut gasoline stream from the crude distillation column is the naphtha cut. This stream has a boiling range of 200-365°F and contains a significant portion of naphthenes, aromatics, and paraffins. Thus, the naphtha cut is hydrotreated and reformed to upgrade this stream into a gasoline blending stock.9... 

The feedstock consists of a mixture of C8 aromatics typically derived from catalytically reformed naphtha, hydrotreated pyrolysis gasoline oran LPG aromatization unit. The feed may contain up to 40% ethylbenzene, which is converted either to xylenes or benzene by the Isomar reactor at a high-conversion rate per pass. Feedstocks may be pure solvent extracts or fractional heartcuts containing up to 25% nonaromatics. Hydrogen may be supplied from a catalytic reforming unit or any suitable source. Chemical hydrogen consumption is minimal. 

The catalytic distillation desulfurization process developed by CDTech is significantly different from conventional hydrotreating.76 77 The most important portion of the CDTech desulfurization process is a set of two distillation columns loaded with desulfurization catalyst in a packed structure. In this process, the LCN, middle cut naphtha (MCN), and HCN are treated separately, under optimal conditions for each. The first column, called CDHydro, treats the lighter compounds of FCC gasoline and separates the heavier portion of the FCC gasoline for treatment in the second column. The second column, called CDHDS (catalytic distillation hydrodesulfurization), removes the sulfur from the heavier compounds of FCC gasoline. Figure 5.6...
