Hydrogen iodide, hydrates

The hydrated oxide possesses oxidising powers, arsenious acid being oxidised to arsenic acid, hydrogen iodide to iodine, whilst hydrogen gas raises the oxide to incandescence, water being formed. [Pg.303]

When heated with diazabicycloundecene in DMSO, 19-iodotabersonine (278), prepared from 197 -vindolinine (109), gives mainly the expected 18,19-didehydrotabersonine (279), together with the cyclobutane derivative 280, and an optically inactive, nonbasic indole derivative, for which the structure 281 has been proposed (208). A much improved yield of 281 can be obtained if the reaction is conducted in DMF in the presence of sodium acetate. The formation of the cyclobutane derivative 280 would seem to involve a straightforward elimination of hydrogen iodide from 278, with assistance from the aniiinoacrylate function, followed by hydration of an Ai 2-double bond. The alternative fission of the 7,21- and 20,21-bonds to give the neutral product 281 may well proceed via an iminium ion 282, as illustrated in Scheme 4 (208). If correct, this mechanism requires the... [Pg.61]

This explanation indicates that the action of sodium upon alcohol is really the action of sodium upon water, partially olefinated. The action of ethyl iodide upon sodium ethoxide is not the replacement of the sodium by ethyl so much as the action of olefinated hydrogen iodide upon olefinated sodium hydroxide. It is the same type of reaction as the neutralization of sodium hydroxide by hydriodic acid in aqueous solution. The hydrated hydrogen iodide reacts with hydrated sodium hydroxide. The water bears the same relation to the latter reaction that the olefin does to the former. [Pg.159]

The difference in properties of the various compoundated hydrogens can be shown by a comparison of the following compounds ethyl iodide, ammonium iodide, and oxonium iodide. Ethyl iodide requires the highest temperature for its dissociation and the hydrate of hydrogen iodide the lowest. This shows why hydrogen is evolved if a metal is dissolved in an aqueous solution of an acid, or if a metal such... [Pg.159]

The hydration number (the number of water molecules intimately associated with the salt) of the quaternary ammonium salt is very dependent upon the anion. The change in the order of reactivity is thus believed to be due to the hydration of the anion the highly hydrated chloride and cyanide ions are less reactive than expected, and the poorly hydrated iodide fares better under phase transfer conditions than in homogeneous reactions. Methanol may specifically solvate the anions via hydrogen bonding, and this effect is responsible for the low reactivity of more polar nucleophiles in that solvent. [Pg.118]

The most employed redncing agents in the old tellurium chemistry were alkali sulphites or hydrogen snlphites, methylmagnesinm iodide and sodinm snlphide hydrate. The last reagent is still nsed, together with the more recently introdnced sodium borohydride, TUDO, hydrazine, samarinm diiodide and sodium ascorbate. ... [Pg.35]
