Figure Bl.24.1. Schematic diagram of the target chamber and detectors used in ion beam analysis. The backscattering detector is mounted close to the incident beam and the forward scattering detector is mounted so that, when the target is tilted, hydrogen recoils can be detected at angles of about 30° from the beam direction. The x-ray detector faces the sample and receives x-rays emitted from the sample. Figure Bl.24.1. Schematic diagram of the target chamber and detectors used in ion beam analysis. Let us consider the formation of sodium chloride from its elements. An energy (enthalpy) diagram (called a Born-Haber cycle) for the reaction of sodium and chlorine is given in Figure 3.7. (As in the energy diagram for the formation of hydrogen chloride, an upward arrow represents an endothermic process and a downward arrow an exothermic process.)... [Pg.73]

The actual value of the enthalpy of hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene is —243 k,l rnol Both are hydrogenated to the same product, u-biitaiie hence the enthalpy diagram (Fig. 7-4) shows that bnta-1,3-diene is 11 kJ rnol. lower in enthalpy than it ought" to be on the basis of the reference standard, bnt-l-ene. [Pg.218]

With the potential energies shown on a common scale we see that the transition state for formation of (CH3)3C is the highest energy point on the diagram A reaction can proceed no faster than its slowest step which is referred to as the rate determining step In the reaction of tert butyl alcohol with hydrogen chloride formation of the... [Pg.159]

Section 4 9 The potential energy diagrams for separate elementary steps can be merged into a diagram for the overall process The diagram for the reac tion of a secondary or tertiary alcohol with a hydrogen halide is charac terized by two intermediates and three transition states The reaction is classified as a ummolecular nucleophilic substitution, abbreviated as SnI... [Pg.180]

A flow diagram of the solvent-refined coal or SRC process is shown ia Figure 12. Coal is pulverized and mixed with a solvent to form a slurry containing 25—35 wt % coal. The slurry is pressurized to ca 7 MPa (1000 psig), mixed with hydrogen, and heated to ca 425°C. The solution reactions are completed ia ca 20 min and the reaction product flashed to separate gases. The Hquid is filtered to remove the mineral residue (ash and undissolved coal) and fractionated to recover the solvent, which is recycled. [Pg.90]

The recovery area of the plant employs fractionation to recover and purify the phenol and acetone products. Also in this section the alpha-methylstyrene is recovered and may be hydrogenated back to cumene or recovered as AMS product. The hydrogenated AMS is recycled as feedstock to the reaction area. The overall yield for the cumene process is 96 mol %. Figure 1 is a simplified process diagram. [Pg.288]

The process implications of equation 3 go beyond the weU-known properties (27—29) of NMP to faciUtate S Ar processes. The function of the aminocarboxylate is also to help solubilize the sulfur source anhydrous sodium sulfide and anhydrous sodium hydrogen sulfide are virtually insoluble in NMP (26). It also provides a necessary proton acceptor to convert thiophenol intermediates into more nucleophilic thiophenoxides. A block diagram for the Phillips low molecular weight linear PPS process is shown in Eigure 1. [Pg.442]

A.mmonium C/j/oride. Work on the distribution of ammonium chloride [12125-02-9] between the vapor andhquid phases (8) suggests that the Ray diagram is sometimes an oversimplification. In most steam systems, there is much more ammonia than any other impurity. In particular, there is more ammonia than hydrogen chloride. The volatiUty of ammonium chloride is therefore expressed by the following chemical equation ... [Pg.355]
