Hydrocyanic add

In the mid 1970s, Ugi and co-workers developed a scheme based on treating reactions by means of matrices - reaction (R-) matrices [16, 17]. The representation of chemical structures by bond and electron (BE-) matrices was presented in Section 2.4. BE-matrices can be constructed not only for single molecules but also for ensembles of them, such as the starting materials of a reaction, e.g., formaldehyde (methanal) and hydrocyanic add as shown with the B E-matrix, B, in Figure 3-12. Figure 3-12 also shows the BE-matrix, E, of the reaction product, the cyanohydrin of formaldehyde.

Especial care is required when working with the following much used substances hydrocyanic add, phosgene, dimethyl sulphate, the lower add chlorides, chlorine, bromine, nitric oxide and nitrogen peroxide, carbon monoxide, sodium, and potassium. Large scale operations with these should be carried out in a special room in any case always in a good fume chamber. 

Nitrates and carbonates of vanadium, niobium, and tantalum have not been prepared. Niobium and tantalum salts of other weak acids, e.g. boric add, hydrocyanic add, phosphoric acid, are also unknown, and in the case of vanadium are not well defined. 

From the per cent of ionization of hydrocyanic add in 0.1 N solution find the value of the ionization constant of that acid. 

Strecker 7 first synthesized alanine by the action of hydrocyanic add on aldehyde ammonia. The present procedure is based on Zelinsky s modification of the Strecker synthesis.8...

It is wholly characteristic of the aldehydes that they unite directly (1) with ammonia, (2) sodium hydrogen sulphite, and (3) hydrocyanic add. The union with ammonia takes place in accordance with the following equation ...

The reaction may be effected by digestion with already prepared hydrocyanic acid at ordinary or higher temperatures, but in most cases it is more advantageous to employ nascent hydrocyanic add as above.

In aqueous solution, HCN behaves as a weak add (pAfa = 9.31) and is slowly hydrolysed (equation 14.85). An older name for hydrocyanic add is prussic acid.
