As mentioned in Sect. 3.2.3 a drawback of this method is the formation of a byproduct, which is salt, which reduces the overall hydrogen content of the synthesized mixture. Another peculiarity of this synthesis method is a complete lack of XRD peaks corresponding to a crystalline synthesized borohydride in the mixture in the right-hand side of the reaction of (3.37). Only the peaks of either LiCl or NaCl are present. On the other hand, the Raman spectra seem to indicate the presence of borohydride. Nakamori et al. [173, 174] interpreted this peculiar behavior as arising most likely due to disordering of the crystal structure of a synthesized borohydride, whatever it means for a sohd state hydride. Rechargeable metal hydrides have a number of potential applications in the "hydrogen economy" concept and in the present industrial sector. Because general surveys of hydride applications have been recently published(1,22,23), we will not try to review all the potential applications, but rather concentrate on a few that might be particularly applicable to the hydrogen industry storage containers, H2 compressors, H2 purification or separation, and deuterium separation.

In eonelusion, one may add that a hydrid application comprising of modeling chemcial reactions and design of transition-state inhibitors for which the proposed reaction core is modeled metieu-lously by the help of quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics would turn out to be the most viable option. 

Although various electrochromic devices have been demonstrated, their performance still needs to be drastically improved. This will require a major research and development effort. On the other hand, the fiber optic metal hydride hydrogen sensor already shows that metal hydride applications may provide a clear advantage over competing systems.
