In the presence of O2, the poly(U)- OH-adducts are scavenged by O2 (k = 4.8 x 108 dm3 mol-1 s Michaels and Hunt 1977b), and the subsequent chemistry is governed by the ensuing peroxyl radicals (Deeble and von Sonntag 1986). Apparently, the base peroxyl radicals can also abstract an H-atom from the sugar moiety (for the kinetics see Bothe et al. 1986). This leads to the formation of hydroperoxides (Table 11.5) and an increased 02-uptake (Isildar et al. 1982). Acidic material is also formed whose yield increases upon heating (Schulte-Frohlinde and Bothe 1984).

Several books—such as Fernando Benitz s In the Magic Land of Peyote, Barbara Myerhoff s Peyote Hunt and Joan Halifax s Shamanic Voices— along with shorter accounts from Peter Furst, Michael Hamer and others describe the Huichol Indians annual trip to gather peyote. These reports have encouraged many Americans to make similar journeys.
