In mice, somatic signs of withdrawal include wet dog shakes, front paw tremor, ataxia, hunched posture, tremor, ptosis, piloerection, mastication and decreased locomotor activity (Hutcheson et al. 1998). The CBl antagonist (SR141716A) has been used to precipitate a withdrawal state in THC-tolerant animals, and higher doses of THC produced a greater withdrawal syndrome (Aceto et al. 1995 Cook et al. 1998). No mammalian enzymes have been shown to utilize PQQ or TTQ as a cofactor, although there is some evidence PPQ may be a dietary essential. Mice fed a defined diet completely devoid of PQQ show unpaired growth, friable skin with hemorrhages, hunched posture, decreased fertility, and fewer mitochondria, which are less viable in vitro than normal. These abnormalities are corrected by providing 1 rnnol (300 ng) of PQQ per g diet (Stites et al., 2000a). It is not known how much PQQ may normally be present in foods, nor how much may be synthesized by intestinal bacteria. 

The production of monoclonal antibodies in vivo, using mice (or other laboratory animals) has come under increasing criticism because of the ethical issues posed by the use of laboratory animals. In Europe, regulatory approval of this method has been withdrawn except for cases were alternative methods are shown not to be available. Mice generating Mabs typically exhibit abdominal distention, anorexia, anemia, decreased activity, and body mass, dehydration, difficulty in walking, respiratory distress, shock, hunched posture, peritonitis, immunosuppression, and possibly death.
