Human resources decision making

Many sophisticated models and correlations have been developed for consequence analysis. Millions of dollars have been spent researching the effects of exposure to toxic materials on the health of animals the effects are extrapolated to predict effects on human health. A considerable empirical database exists on the effects of fires and explosions on structures and equipment. And large, sophisticated experiments are sometimes performed to validate computer algorithms for predicting the atmospheric dispersion of toxic materials. All of these resources can be used to help predict the consequences of accidents. But, you should only perform those consequence analysis steps needed to provide the information required for decision making. [Pg.34]

The Wickens model suggests that there are finite information-processing or attentional resources available, as represented by the box in Figure 2.2. These resources can be distributed in different ways but cannot be increased. Thus, interpretation of complex or unusual information displayed by the interface will leave fewer resources available for handling the response selection and decision making demands. This provides a theoretical basis for the view of human error described in Section 1.7, which described error as a mismatch between demands and capabilities. [Pg.56]

Each nation that has implemented universal health insurance has created its system in the context of cultural, political, and economic values. The values held by other advanced countries that support universal health care include a sense of national and community responsibility, social solidarity, universality, equity, acceptance of the role of government, and skepticism about markets in addressing social and human needs. Political and economic values shape the administrative and financial dimensions of their health systems. As a result, each system is unique in its balance of central and local decision-making, the power and role of hospitals and physicians, and the extent to which market forces allocate resources. [Pg.319]

Personnel selection can take place in one of two ways, depending on the management culture. One way is for the executive/management board to make top-down decisions. However, a structured selection process can also be used in which each company nominates two or three candidates for each position, and these candidates are then interviewed by their respective supervisors and by the human resources director. Very often, some human resource consultants are involved in the process as well. The evaluation is ideally performed along defined criteria and should be as objective as possible. [Pg.192]
