There has been a notable change in the way that the GA has been used as it has become more popular in science. Some of the earliest applications of the GA in chemistry (for example, the work of Hugh Cartwright and Robert Long, and Andrew Tuson and Hugh Cartwright on chemical flowshops) used the GA as the sole optimization tool many more recent applications combine the GA with a second technique, such as an artificial neural network. 

This value of 0.43 mSv for the average annual effective dose equivalent for the UK as a whole is somewhat lower than the currently used value of 0.70 mSv (Roberts and Hughes, 1984). The difference arises partly from taking into account the lower exposure in bedrooms revealed in the national survey. Another reason is that no allowance is made in this survey (Table 2) for exposure received during the 15% of the time spent indoors at other locations nor while in the open.

For many years, die nature and location of the complex of proteins (sometimes referred to as the engine of photosynthesis) were poorly understood. During the 1980s, much more was learned as the result of research carried out by Johann Deisenhofer (Howard Hughes Medical Institute), Robert Huber, and Harmut Michel (Max Planck Institute), and for this work the investigators were awarded the 1988 Nobel Prize for chemistry. The protein complex, called the membrane-bound proteins, are difficult to define structurally because they do not crystallize readily and thus could not be subjected to x-ray crystallography. However, over a period of three years, the researchers were able to create crystals and thus were able to determine precisely the position of some 10,000 atoms in the protein complex.
