Maintenance. The lack of maintenance and investment in inspection programs results in not only poor housekeeping but unnoticed leaks due to corrosion, leaking flanges and valves, and inoperative instmmentation that could prevent spills.

Preventive measures include everything from safe work practices to training programs, good housekeeping, regular audits, administrative and engineering controls, and chemical-protection equipment. 

To develop a good housekeeping program as an element of fire prevention, the following actions should be taken ... 

All cooling water treatments produce the best results in clean well-maintained cooling systems. (It is easier to keep a clean system clean than to prevent a dirty system from getting dirtier.) Therefore, it is in the field representative s best interests to ensure that a suitable program for maintenance management and good housekeeping practice is implemented. These activities should also be planned and documented, similar to all water treatment activities. 

Design, operation and maintenance of buildings and equipment, with attention to housekeeping, sanitation, pest control, prevention of contamination of product, cleaning of equipment, a calibration program for all instruments and gauges, and environmentally satisfactory methods of waste disposal. 

Maintaining an effective housekeeping program to prevent/remove dust accumulations on potential hot surfaces. 

Housekeeping is, by far, one of the easiest preventive methods to implement and tends to have the most immediate impact upon the workplace. Poor housekeeping leads to a myriad of hazards from slips, trips, and falls to fire hazards. Housekeeping is a portion of a hazard removal program in which everyone in the woricplace can take an active role. Becanse of this, it will impact more than just accident prevention it will also increase morale and productivity (see Figure 25.16). 

The following is an example of an objective that may be consistent with your basic safety program Conduct weekly inspections with emphasis on good housekeeping, proper use of personal protective equipment, and condition of critical parts of equipment and preventive maintenance [3].
