House of Commons Select Committee

The law was further tightened in 1871, when the appointment of vaccination officers was made compulsory for all local authorities. A House of Commons Select Committee, set up in 1871 to investigate the efficacy of the compulsory system, was concerned by a report by Dr Jonathan Hutchinson, who gave an account of the transmission of syphilis in two patients by arm-to-arm inoculation of the material from the pustule of one patient to the arm of another. The use of calf lymph vaccine did not become standard until 1893, when a commercially available preparation was introduced. Prior to this, it had been impossible to standardize the material used for vaccination. [Pg.423]

For example. Defence Secretary George Younger told the House of Commons Select Committee on Defence (subsequently referred to as the HCDC) in 1986 ... there are no chemical weapons in any of those [US] bases. There is no suggestion there should be chemical weapons in any of those bases and there are therefore no arrangements particularly related to chemical weapons because they are not here and we are not likely to have them . The House of Commons Education and Skills Committee Report (2006 66) is highly critical of the pressure exerted by the national league tables on schools and their (un)willingness to include a broader range of students. They argue that the introduction of contextualised value added results has not had any real impact. Referring to research from the Sutton Trust (2006) as evidence, the report notes that the top 200 performing non-selective state schools take far below their fair share of children with SEN . It seems that other and better forms of accountability are still required. [Pg.11]

Despite the efforts of the select committee and others, early in 1978, the then Secretary of State for Energy, Tony Benn, made an announcement in the House of Commons that the SGHWR was to be abandoned and that the CEGB and SSEB were to each build a twin-unit AGR station. In addition, Benn said the government supported the industry s intention to order a PWR station. [Pg.302]
