Hormone Signal transduction

Calcitonin lowers serum Ca2+ and Pi levels, primarily by inhibiting the process of bone resorption, but also by decreasing resorption of Pi and Ca2+ in the kidney. Calcitonin receptors are predictably found primarily on bone cells (osteoclasts) and renal cells, and generation of cAMP via adenylate cyclase activation plays a prominent role in hormone signal transduction. [Pg.324]

EIN2 operating downstream of CTRl is considered a central component in the ethylene signaling pathway and also it is assumed to be a common node mediating crosstalk of multiple hormone signal transduction pathways. " ... [Pg.108]

Fig. 3.8. Variability of receptor systems and signal pathways, a) For one receptor of a given binding specificity (binding to hormone H) there can be different snbtypes in the same ceU (Rl, R2) or in other cell types (Rl )- b) The hormone H can induce different reactions (X, X ) upon binding the different receptor types (Rl, R2). The receptor types Rl and R2 can be found simultaneous in one cell, c) the binding of two different hormones (H, H ) to different receptors (Rl , R3) can induce the same intracellular reaction. The characteristics a) and b) contribute to a high degree to the diversity and variability of hormonal signal transduction. Point c) illustrates the principle that important cellular metabolites or reactions can be controlled by different signal transduction pathways. Fig. 3.8. Despite the central importance of adenylyl cyclase for hormonal signal transduction, its structural and functional characterization is incomplete. In mammals, at least 9 different membrane-bound types of adenylyl cyclase are described these are known as adenylyl cyclases of types I - IX and show a high degree of sequence homology (ca. 50%) (review Tesmer and Sprang, 1998 Patel et al., 2001). In addition, one cytosolic adenylyl cyclase has been described to date. [Pg.220]

With the current pace in the plant hormone signal transduction research, in the next few years exciting new discoveries in this field can be expected. Elucidation of hormone signal transduction pathways in plants will most likely reveal the existence of new signalling mechanisms that are unique to plants. [Pg.407]

Novozyme 435 has also been applied by a Novartis group for the synthesis of optically pure 2,6-di-O-henzoyl-myo-inositol ((-)-99) and its monoacetate (-)-lOO. These intermediates are precursors for the rare and expensive inositol phosphates d-101 and l-101 (Scheme 30) [95], compounds which are essential for a number of physiological processes in differentiated higher cells, e.g., the activation of thrombocytes in the blood clotting process or hormone signal transduction. The key intermediate rac-99 could be prepared in four chemical steps, and the Novo 435-catalyzed asymmetric acetylation afforded monoacetate (-)-lOO besides unconverted inositol derivative (-)-99 with optical purities of >99%, respectively. The subsequent chemical hydrolysis of (-)-lOO quantitatively yielded the antipode of (-)-99, and a phosphorylation. [Pg.295]

In addition to ipt gene, a number of genes involved in hormone signal transduction have been indentified to influence the regenerative competence of plant cells for somatic embryogenesis and/or adventitious shoot formation (Sakamoto et al., 2006 Srinivasan et al., 2007, 2011). [Pg.364]

Further investigation into the involvement of protein kinases and second messengers in hormonal signal transduction in plant cell is needed to explain pleiotropic effect of phytohormones, and also the quite distinct responses in different types of plant cells to phytohormones. [Pg.550]
