Hormone adrenal androgens

Adrenal hormone production is controlled by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) is secreted by the hypothalamus and stimulates secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), also known as corticotropin from the anterior pituitary. ACTH, in turn, stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce cortisol. When sufficient or excessive cortisol levels are reached, a negative feedback is exerted on the secretion of CRH and ACTH, thereby decreasing overall cortisol production. The control of adrenal androgen synthesis also follows a similar negative-feedback mechanism.

Male Hormones. The androgenic hormones produced in Ihe testes land adrenal gland t have a w idespread effect upon the development of secondary sexual characteristics (musculature, facial hair, larynx, etc. I. as well as upon the sexual organs and responses themselves. They also promote anabolism tu a marked degree by their effect upon nitrogen and calcium metabolism. The structure of testosterone is shown in the Tahle I. 

The adrenal glands play an important role in pubertal development. Termed adrenarche, the maturation of a prominent zona reticularis, the innermost layer of the cortex, begins around age six to eight in girls, resulting in increased secretion of the adrenal androgens, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and DHEA sulfate (Beckman Feuston, 2003). Surgery was subsequently performed to correct the labial fusion and clitoral hypertrophy. The child has developed normally and is being closely monitored for hormone replacement dose requirements to avoid either iatrogenic Cushing s syndrome from excess glucocorticoid or premature epiphyseal closure and short stature from unsuppressed adrenal androgen production.

These include the glucocorticoids, the mineralo-corticoids, and the adrenal androgens. This chapter begins with a section on general steroid biochemistry, followed by a discussion of the clinical and biological functions of the steroid hormones produced by the adrenal cortex.
