Hole watch

Provide a means of communication between the worker(s) in the CS and an outside hole watch so that help can be summoned quickly. [Pg.224]

An entry supervisor is responsible to coordinate all activities related to the CS before issuing a CSE permit. They plan the entry and develop rescue plans. They check the LEL or toxic components of the confined space and the list of all LOTO items and signatures. They also assign the hole watch and entry workers. The entry supervisor has the authority to withhold issuing a permit if unsafe conditions have been detected. Since no permit remains valid beyond the duration of a shift, they have the responsibility to initiate work stoppage as the permit nears its duration. [Pg.225]

The attendant (also called buddy and hole watch) has the primary responsibility of monitoring the safety of the persons working in the CS. They review the permit before any... [Pg.225]

The ozone layer protects Earth s surface from damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Therefore, if the concentration of ozone in the stratosphere decreases substantially, more UV radiation wiU reach Earth s surface, causing unwanted photochemical reactions, including reactions correlated with skin cancer. Satellite monitoring of ozone, which began in 1978, has revealed a depletion of ozone in the stratosphere that is particularly severe over Antarctica, a phenomenon known as the ozone hole ( FIGURE 18.6). The first scientific paper on this phenomenon appeared in 1985, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) maintains an Ozone Hole Watch website with daily updates and data from 1999 to the present. [Pg.756]

Early on in the conhned-space and rescue class, a rather portly truck driver had been assigned to complete training. One of the exercises for mock rescue included pretending that a team member had been disabled while performing a work task in a confined space. The hole watch person would notify the rescue people, who had already set up a tripod that was sitting over a mock circular entry. The (mock) disabled truck driver was already equipped with a safety harness and lifeline attached to his body and a rescue tripod and winch. [Pg.91]

The first crew might specialize in entries and provide the hole watch and monitoring necessary for testing and entry. The next crew might consist of outside cleaning contractors who enter the tank for the express... [Pg.145]

The simplest form of apparatus consists of a small porcelain evaporating dish covered with a filter paper which has been perforated with a number of small holes a watch glass of the same size, convex side uppermost, is placed on the filter paper. The substance is placed inside the dish, and the latter heated with a minute flame on a wire gauze or sand bath. The sublimate collects in the Fig. II, 45, 1. watch glass, and the filter paper below prevents the sublimate from falling into the residue. The watch glass may be kept cool by covering it with several pieces of damp filter... [Pg.154]

Procedure Switch on the ultrasonic cleaning tank filled with water and watch for the position of cavitation activity through the circular rings formed on the surface of water. Hold the Al-foil on the circular ring for 2-3 min and remove. Watch the foil against the light or through an overhead projector for the holes created on it as a result of cavitation. [Pg.383]

Make a small hole in the crystal slightly less than the length of the hand from the center of the crystal. Insert the screw from the front of the crystal and tighten it so that it projects from the concave side. Carefully scrape any paint from the edge of the hand where it will make contact with the screw. Replace the crystal in the watch. See Figure 10. [Pg.11]

Dennis watched all of this and then delivered himself of one of the many riddles that he was to propound over the next few days. "What can you do with a hole in a stick that you can t do with a stick in a hole ," he bellowed across the sandy expanse to where I stood by the fire. I assumed that this answer involved a dig at the cheerful and steamy assumptions of Tantra in favor of the idea that... [Pg.103]

For white wine production, the grapes usually were not stemmed. The crushed grapes were left for six to ten hours before the free-run (separated) juice was drawn off. The pomace was then pressed and the pressed pomace was washed as with red pomace. The fermentation of white musts was done in 2/3-full oak casks. The fermentation was watched daily. The yeast foam was removed. By the sixth day, the fermentation had slowed down sufficiently to then use a fermenting bung. The Italians often use a bag of sand, which they place over the bung-hole. He recommended fermenting room temperatures of 21°-27° C and cellar temperatures of 15.6°-21° C, preferring 15.6° C after the first year. [Pg.18]
