In the previous chapter we used the history of chemistry to explore and explain the recent (or perhaps not so recent) crisis of confidence in chemistry. This problem is accentuated by the fact that the crisis resonates with much older traditions and perceptions of chemistry. Thus, our modern-day fear of chemistry reflects a much longer collective memory that stretches back at least to the medieval period. Although largely unconscious, this memory is regularly reactivated and accentuated by the media as well as by popular scientific literature and fiction. 

The history of anaesthesia reportedly stretches back to ancient times and through the medieval period. It is documented that as far back as 1500 bc opium-based preparations were in use for anaesthetic purposes. In the Middle Ages the use of the Spongia somnifera was reported. This was a sponge, soaked with a mixture of herbal agents (poppy, henbane, mandrake), and was allowed to dry and then, when the operation was due to commence, the sponge was placed over the nose of the patient and treated with hot water. The infusion produced the anaesthesia. Alcohol was also commonly used to produce a state of anaesthesia in historical times. 

In this chapter, I explore the link in literature between today s public image of science and medieval alchemy in more detail and with reference to the history of science, and I will do so by focusing on the literary representation of chemists in the nineteenth century. Since twentieth-century films and popular literature featuring mad scientists frequently draw on, exploit, and simplify classics from the nineteenth century (Tourney 1992), it is this period that deserves particular attention. We will see that such figures as the mad scientist were created not for entertainment reasons, as Crichton believes, but in a nineteenth-century...

On even shorter scales, human civilization arose in an interglacial period within an extensive period of glacial conditions. Chicago was under 1 km of ice as recently as 18,000 years ago. The medieval warming period and the little ice age that followed had important effects on recent history. 

One of the main problems we have with extracting history from the biblical text is that many personages and events are attested in no other source. This applies to the seminal period of the Israehte monarchy s beginnings, with the reigns of David and Solomon. Not only are there no other written sources, but the archaeology is currently disputed. Without other reliable sources we are thrown back on trying to evaluate the biblical account, with all its problematic features. I propose here to use the story of the medieval Spanish hero known as El Cid to illumine the historical process involved in appraising the biblical account.

Perhaps our labors may be most usefully compared with the work of those students of medieval science who devote their best efforts to the establishment of texts. Only when acceptable texts have been constructed from fragmentary and corrupt sources can scholars move on to the more satisfying business of making history. So too in the modern period, a necessary preliminary to the full history of any scientific profession is the establishing of reliable quantitative information in the form of statistical series.
