Chapter 1 in Melamed et al., Chapter 3 in Shapiro, and Chapter 1 in Darzynkiewicz are good historical reviews of flow cytometry. Alberto Cambrosio and Peter Keating (2000) have used flow cytometry as a model for looking at historical changes in the way scientists use instrumentation to view the world Of lymphocytes and pixels The techno-visual production of cell populations. Evidence in mice indicates that the fetus may be particularly susceptible to compromised immunocompetence due to altered stem cell populations of key immunoactive cells (Barnett et al. 1990a, 1990b). Infants may be unusually susceptible to a chronic seizure disorder following exposure to chlordane, particularly if they have a hereditary predisposition, such as a positive familial history of febrile convulsions (Bernad 1989). [Pg.106]

The role of glucocorticoids in the regulation of System A activity in isolated hepatocytes has been studied in both cell suspensions and primary monolayer cultures. The inherent differences between these two cell populations with respect to a few of the characteristics of amino acid transport have been repeatedly documented (10, 25, 27, 28). Collectively, the investigations of glucocorticoid action on System A represent one of the best demonstrations that regulatory phenomena in hepatocytes should be tested using cells in suspension and in primary culture. T o illustrate this point and to explain some of the apparent contradictions in the data from different laboratories, the discussion of glucocorticoid action on System A will be presented in relation to the history or age of the hepatocytes. [Pg.148]

There are a variety of ways that toxic Gonyaulax cells could be introduced to areas with no previous history of PSP, and most of these involve cysts. The most common claim is that transport of an established motile population by tidal and large-scale circulation patterns permits a species to deposit cysts in new areas as seeds for future blooms (1, 9, 10, 31). Within this framework, the cyst is most important in those areas where advection of... [Pg.131]

Arentz-Hansen et al. (2004) ( continuation of Lundin et al, 2003) 9 CD subjects who had history of oats exposure ( 5/9 from same study population) Derivation of polyclonal T cell lines In vitro duodenal mucosal cultures were challenged with either pepsin or Avenin-reactive T cell lines recognized avenin peptides in the context of HLA-DQ2 A substantial proportion of the avenin-reactive T cell appears to be specific to avenin Some CD patients have avenin-reactive mucosal T cells that can cause mucosal inflammation... [Pg.246]

In this chapter we present an individual-based population model (Metapopulation model for Assessing Spatial and Temporal Effects of Pesticides [MASTEP]). M ASTEP describes the effects on, and recovery of, populations of the water louse Asellus aqua-ticus following exposure to a fast-acting, nonpersistent insecticide caused by spray drift for pond, ditch, and stream scenarios. The model used the spatial and temporal distribution of the exposure in different treatment conditions as an input parameter. A dose-response relation derived from a hypothetical mesocosm study was used to link the exposure with the effects. The modeled landscape was represented as a lattice of 1 x 1 m cells. The model included processes of mortality of A. aquaticus, life history, random walk between cells, density-dependent population regulation, and in the case of the stream scenario, medium-distance drift of A. aquaticus due to flow. All parameter estimates were based on the results of a thorough review of published information on the ecology of A. aquaticus and expert judgment. [Pg.75]
