HAART Highly active anti-retroviral therapy... 

A major impact in the treatment of HIV involves anti-retroviral therapy with APIs that belong to a class known as the avir family of highly active pharmaceuticals. A number of these avirs contain the l-phenyl-2,4-diamino-butan-3-ol fragment (Q). 

After the advent of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) the incidence of HIV dementia has been reduced by more than 50%. While prior to HAART the incidence was 21 cases for every 100 patient years, the incidence since HAART is reduced tolO.5 per 1,000 patient years. Interestingly, the prevalence of HIV dementia has increased with HAART patients with dementia live longer. Even with advanced AIDS of CD4 counts of less than 100 mm- patients have longevities almost eightfold higher than previously. 

Retroviral nucleocapsid proteins have been proposed as an attractive target for HIV inactivation and therapy [9-11] due to the presence of a highly conserved motif (zinc fingers) that is required for their activity. Chemical reactivity towards these sequences has been demonstrated with compounds bearing different active groups, which constitute a virtual library numbering in the tens of thousands.
