Ozone (O3) is a bluish irritant gas that occurs normally in the earth s atmosphere, where it is an important absorbent of ultraviolet light. In the workplace, it can occur around high-voltage electrical equipment and around ozone-producing devices used for air and water purification. It is also an important oxidant found in polluted urban air. The effect of low ambient levels of ozone on admission to Ontario, Canada, hospitals for respiratory problems revealed a near-linear gradient between exposure (1-hour level, 20-100 ppb) and response. Formal reviews normally require appropriate documentation. For example. Excel spreadsheets or Word templates are available for conducting safety reviews to ensure that a specific process has been used in the analysis and to document the results of the review. The documentation should include the team members, the dates and times of the review, the functional area of each team member, the purpose of the review, the equipment and processes being analyzed, key specifications for the equipment (e.g., maximum flow rate), what codes and standards apply to the review if any, and a discussion of past incidents that may be relevant to what is being reviewed. High voltage electrical equipment can only be worked on in safety if either the part of the apparatus or equipment to be worked on is permanently and adequately earthed, so that it is electrically dead at all times, or the apparatus or equipment is first made safe by earthing, tested for verification, and then released for work by the issue of a E permit. Before any work is carried out on remotely or automatically controlled equipment such as circuit breakers and isolators, the automatic or remote controlled features must first be rendered inoperative.
