High-temperature superconductivity overview

We end this book with an overview of a topic that has immense promise but is still in the laboratory stage of development, namely, high temperature superconductivity.22 24 Since superconductivity is intimately related to magnetic phenomena in solids, a brief consideration of magnetochemistry25 is prerequisite.

HIGH-TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY IN LAYERED CUPRATES OVERVIEW... 

Positron annihilation is widely applied to study high-rc superconductors. After presenting the basic concepts (sect. 2) and discussing some experimental aspects (sect. 3), there is an overview of the results obtained so far in YBa2Cu307 (sect. 4), in YBa2Cu30y 5 with substitutions (sect. 5), and in other high-temperature superconducting oxides (sect. 6). 

Here we give an overview of fluctuation dominated thermotropic liquid crystal phase transitions with a few hints of emerging aspects. From this perspective, the situation may be fairly summarized by noting that while analogies to phase transition models in spin-space (e.g. XY model with two components for the order parameter or Ising model with one) or momentum space (superconductivity) are a powerful tool to predict qualitative behavior for fluctuation dominated, real space, high temperature liquid crystal phase transitions, there is a significant gap between several quantitative (and qualitative) expectations and experimental measurements.
