After 1 joined the lEEE-USA Health Care Engineering Policy Committee, I helped found, and ultimately chaired, the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and High Performance Computers and Communications (HPCC) Subcommittees. In the latter role, I was chosen to be an expert witness to Congress on the area of HPCC, and to craft a policy-level position statement. I also became a member of the Department of Health and Human Services Security team of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, which developed the report to Congress on the security of health data and communications. [Pg.210]

The scientific and high-performance computing (HPC) community has recently become more interested in cloud computing. Compared to SaaS workloads, which rely on request-level parallelism, HPC workloads typically rely on thread- or task-level parallelism, making them more communication-intensive and more sensitive to communication latency. These properties make HPC workloads particularly vulnerable to performance noise artifacts introduced by the pervasive use of virtualization in cloud environments (Armbrust et al., 2010b). [Pg.9]

Chen MD, Hsieh TJ (2012) Run-tme GPU computing and rendering of earthquake ground-motion data. In Proceedings of the IEEE 9th international conference on high performance cmnputing and communication, pp 812-817... [Pg.1126]

During this project, a 3D finite element model of the fluid dynamics of the ocular lens was designed and executed on our high performance computer. This sophisticated computer model was then linked to a website, in order to elevate it from a local computer model to a global research and educational tool. The presentation of the 3D fluid microcirculation model of the ocular lens over the internet, combined with its user-friendly graphical user interface, has enabled it as a computer model to be used by students and researchers worldwide. Such exposure to the international lens community makes this model a unique debate point in order to obtain a better understanding of the ocular lens homeostasis and its role in the functionality. [Pg.25]

Rapid advances in computer technology, resulting in ever smaller, less costly, high-performance computers, have resulted in a vast number of applications containing embedded computers as elements. These range from highly complex communications systems to biomedical imaging devices, sophisticated consumer products, and household appliances. [Pg.27]
