High-intensity magnetic separators

High intensity magnetic separators are used to upgrade iron ores containing hematite or ilmenite. Dry separators require ore that is finely sized and bone dry. They are dusty, expensive, and have a low capacity. Wet separators have larger capacity, are less dusty and can handle ore sizes up to 1 mm.

Tin concentration from these deposits is further complicated because these deposits contain sulphides, and occasionally tin-bearing sulphides. These sulphides have to be removed from the final tin concentrate. Some ores (New Brunswick, Canada) contain wolframite, which is removed by either flotation or high-intensity magnetic separation. 

Physical methods of separation are preferred to those using chemical reagents or organic solvents. These are the standard methods of separation of minerals. The graphite sleeves, the most common radwaste, are transferred to a crushing machine with a high intensity magnetic separator. A magnet deflects the stainless steel wires towards a shielded container with a thickness of 180 mm of iron plus at least 60 mm of lead, at least. The graphite falls down to a cubic steel container of 8 mm thick.

Water-washed day - Water-washed kaolin has been slurried in water and centrifuged or hydrocycloned to remove impmities and produce specific particle size fractions. The refined slurry is either dewatered (to reduce soluble impurities) and dried, or concentrated to 70% solids and sold in slurry form. Water-washed clays are often treated to improve brightness. This includes chemical bleaching and/or high-intensity magnetic separation to remove iron and titanium impurities.
