Heterogeneous reactions synthesis

The use of azide reagents is also important for the synthesis of cyclic sulfur(VI)-nitrogen systems. The reaction of SOCI2 with sodium azide in acetonitrile at -35°C provides a convenient preparation of the trimeric sulfanuric chloride [NS(0)C1]3 (Eq. 2.16). " Thionyl azide, SO(N3)2 is generated by the heterogeneous reaction of thionyl chloride vapour with silver azide (Eq. 2.17). This thermally unstable gas was characterized in situ by photoelectron spectroscopy. The phenyl derivative of the six-membered ring [NS(0)Ph]3 can be prepared from lithium azide and PhS(0)Cl. ... [Pg.23]

Under certain condition, however, reactions are still preferably conducted in solution. This is the case e.g., for heterogeneous reactions and for conversions, which deliver complex product mixtures. In the latter case, further conversion of this mixture on the solid support is not desirable. In these instances, the combination of solution chemistry with polymer-assisted conversions can be an advantageous solution. Polymer-assisted synthesis in solution employs the polymer matrix either as a scavenger or for polymeric reagents. In both cases the virtues of solution phase and solid supported chemistry are ideally combined allowing for the preparation of pure products by filtration of the reactive resin. If several reactive polymers are used sequentially, multi-step syntheses can be conducted in a polymer-supported manner in solution as well. As a further advantage, many reactive polymers can be recycled for multiple use. [Pg.382]

Mediated electrolyses make use of electron transfer mediators PjQ that shuttle electrons between electrodes and substrates S, avoiding adverse effects encountered with the direct heterogeneous reaction of substrates at electrode surfaces (Scheme 6). In recent years this mode of electrochemical synthesis has been widely studio and it is becoming increasingly well understood. A review is given in vol 1 of the present electrochemistry series... [Pg.61]

Solid-phase organic synthesis (SPOS) exhibits several shortcomings, due to the nature of the heterogeneous reaction conditions. Nonlinear kinetic behavior, slow reactions, solvation problems, and degradation of the polymer support due to the long reaction times are some of the problems typically experienced in SPOS [2], Any technique which is able to address these issues and to speed up the process of solid-... [Pg.292]

A related development that had profound impact on heterogeneous reactions is the use of microwave (MW) irradiation techniques for the acceleration of organic reactions. Since the appearance of initial reports on the application of microwaves for chemical synthesis in polar solvents [11], the approach has blossomed into a useful... [Pg.181]

This chapter will deal with applications of microwave irradiation in the synthesis of heterocycles by a variety of means, excluding cycloadditions, which will be described in the next chapter. We have chosen to report first reactions in solution in organic solvents, then heterogeneous reactions without solvent under a variety of conditions, and finally to deal with emerging techniques which employ ionic liquids. [Pg.253]

The use of polymeric, insoluble protecting groups in combinatorial or parallel synthesis that allow for the facile separation of target compounds from the rest of the reaction mixture under heterogeneous reaction conditions. Final target compounds may be assayed either while still attached to the resin beads or following cleavage... [Pg.64]

Kaupp et al. also exploited heterogeneous reactions with CICN and BrCN in the quantitative synthesis of cyanamides, cyanates, thiocyanates and derivatives [26]. Gaseous acids were shown to form salts with strong and weak solid nitrogen bases. Solid hydrohalides are formed quantitatively by reaction with vapours of HCl, HBr and HI the same applies to di-bases such as o-phenylen-diamines. The products are much more easily handled than when they are formed in solution. The solid products can in turn be used in reactions with gaseous acetone to form the corresponding dihydrohalides of 1,5-benzodi-azepines [27]. [Pg.77]

This new technique incorporates a catalyzed short contact time (SCT) substrate into a shock tube. Fig. 13. These SCT reactors are currently used in industry for a variety of applications, including fuel cell reformers and chemical synthesis. The combination of a single pulse shock tube with the short contact time reactor enables the study of complex heterogeneous reactions over a catalyst for very well defined regimes in the absence of transport effects. These conditions initiate reaction in a real environment then abruptly terminate or freeze the reaction sequence. This enables detection of intermediate chemical species that give insight into the reaction mechanism occurring in the presence of the chosen catalyst. There is no limitation in terms of the catalyst formulations the technique can study. [Pg.209]

A simple tool is described, which provides a conceptual framework for analyzing microkinetic models of heterogeneous reactions. We refer to this tool as the Sabatier Analysis . The Sabatier Analysis of the microkinetic models developed in this section suggests that the clustering of good catalysts can be explained by the combination of the universal BEP-relation and activated re-adsorption of synthesis products onto the catalyst. [Pg.298]

Using Mossbauer spectroscopy to monitor the formation of p-hematin under in vitro reaction conditions, Adams et al. have demonstrated that the reaction is a psuedo-zero-order process [109]. Such a process is consistent with a mechanism whereby a small concentration of heme is kept soluble via acetate, functioning as a phase-transfer catalyst, in a heme-saturated solution. In the rate limiting step, the soluble heme aggregates to P-hematin, which in turn grows until it precipitates from solution. There are clearly complicated heterogeneous reaction equilibria involved in the aqueous chemical formation of p-hematin. Consequently, it should be emphasized that the detailed mechanistic analysis of the complex solubilization of the species involved in the chemical synthesis... [Pg.357]

Several 1,2-dithiones can be obtained from 1,2-diones by direct sulfurization with P4S[0 or B2S3. The usually heterogeneous reaction can be accelerated by the use of ultrasound.24 Although most dithiones are prone to hydrolysis and decomposition (some cannot be prepared at all under the above conditions), they are most useful intermediates in the synthesis of more complex dithiolenes. [Pg.598]

The modeling of RD processes is illustrated with the heterogenously catalyzed synthesis of methyl acetate and MTBE. The complex character of reactive distillation processes requires a detailed mathematical description of the interaction of mass transfer and chemical reaction and the dynamic column behavior. The most detailed model is based on a rigorous dynamic rate-based approach that takes into account diffusional interactions via the Maxwell-Stefan equations and overall reaction kinetics for the determination of the total conversion. All major influences of the column internals and the periphery can be considered by this approach. [Pg.361]
