The Srn 1 reaction has been applied to heterocycles. Among five-membered ring compounds, halothiophenes have been the most studied they have been shown to be susceptible to both electron-stimulated and photostimulated reactions, and have been converted to the corresponding acetonitriles [150], acetones [151], and phenyl-sulfides [ 152] in low to medium yields. In the study with the benzenethiolate anion it has been shown that the yield is low because of fragmentation of the adduct radical anion it can be increased by adding an electron acceptor, e.g. benzonitrile which prevents decomposition. Further applications include the thermally activated SrnI reaction between 3-iodobenzothiophene and enolates [153] and the photo-stimulated reaction of 3-halo-2-aminobenzothiophenes [154]. [Pg.1034]

During experiments to trap a reaction product of a nitroso compound and isonitrile with an alkyl isocyanate, an additional way of formation of diaziridinimines was discovered. Besides some other heterocycles the five-membered ring compound 138 was formed, which yielded 133 by extrusion of carbon dioxide at 150°. ... [Pg.94]

Pyrrole, fiiran, and thiophene are heterocycles with five-membered rings. We have seen that these compounds are aromatic because they are cyclic and planar, every atom in the ring has a p orbital, and the tt cloud contains three pairs of tt electrons (Sections 8.8 and 8.10). [Pg.994]

A completely different, important type of synthesis, which was developed more recently, takes advantage of the electrophilicity of nitrogen-containing 1,3-dipolar compounds rather than the nucleophilicity of amines or enamines. Such compounds add to multiple bonds, e.g. C—C, C C, C—O, in a [2 + 3 -cycioaddition to form five-membered heterocycles. [Pg.152]

Sulfur containing heterocycles are also common Compounds m which sulfur is the heteroatom m three four five and six membered rings as well as larger rings are all well known Two interesting heterocyclic compounds that contain sulfur-sulfur bonds are hpoic acid and lenthiomne... [Pg.132]

The strain energies of these five-membered heterocycles are relatively small with values of 23.5, 24.8 and S.SkJmoF estimated for tetrahydrofuran, pyrrolidine and tetrahy-drothiophene respectively (74PMH(6)199). The closeness of the values for the two former compounds reflects the almost identical covalent radii of oxygen (0.66 A) and nitrogen (0.70 A) atoms. The sulfur atom with a much larger covalent radius of 1.04 A causes a... [Pg.27]

The conversion of furans by oxidative acetylation or methoxylation to 2,5-diacetoxy- or 2,5-dimethoxy-2,5-dihydrofurans respectively, and their subsequent hydrogenation to the corresponding tetrahydrofurans, provides a useful source of protected 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds capable of conversion inter alia into the other five-membered heterocycles [Pg.142]

There are several useful syntheses which effectively commence with the cycloaddition of oxygen, a nitroso compound, an azo compound or a sulfinylamine to a 1,3-diene leading to the corresponding 1,2-dioxins, 1,2-oxazines, pyridazines or 1,2-thiazines. Examples of the transformation of these adducts into five-membered heterocycles are shown in Scheme 114 together with leading references. [Pg.150]

Details of bond lengths and bond angles for all the X-ray structures of heterocyclic compounds through 1970 are listed in Physical Methods in Heterocyclic Chemistry , volume 5. This compilation contains many examples for five-membered rings containing two heteroatoms, particularly pyrazoles, imidazoles, Isoxazoles, oxazoles, isothlazoles, thlazoles, 1,2-dlthloles and 1,3-dlthloles. Further examples of more recent measurements on these heterocyclic compounds can be found in the monograph chapters. [Pg.8]

Saturated five-membered heterocyclic compounds are non-planar, existing in half-chair or envelope conformations. The far-IR spectra of THE and 1,3-dioxolane (127) show both to have barriers of ca. 0.42 kJ moP ... [Pg.34]

In comparison to N—S bond formation, O—N bond formation by essentially oxidative procedures has found few applications in the synthesis of five-membered heterocycles. The 1,2,4-oxadiazole system (278) was prepared by the action of sodium hypochlorite on A(-acylamidines (277) (76S268). The A -benzoylamidino compounds (279) were also converted into the 1,2,4-oxadiazoles (280) by the action of r-butyl hypochlorite followed by base. In both cyclizations A -chloro compounds are thought to be intermediates (76BCJ3607). [Pg.137]

Ollis and Ramsden state that A compound may be appropriately called mesoionic if it is a five-membered heterocycle which cannot be represented satisfactorily by any one covalent or polar structure and possesses a sextet of electrons in association with the five atoms comprising the ring . From the point of view of systematic nomenclature, compounds of this type are difficult to deal with, since most available nomenclature systems are designed so as to name one particular bond- and charge-localized canonical form. [Pg.34]

Dipolar cycloaddUions. Interest in 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions increased dramatically during the past 20 years, largely because of the pioneering studies of Huisgen [7, 2] The versatility of this class of pericychc reactions in the synthesis of five-membered-ring heterocyclic compounds is comparable with that of the Diels-Alder reaction in the synthesis of six-membered-ring carbocyclic systems (equation 1)... [Pg.797]
