Herring stocks

After we ve helped Morgan take down her stall and pack her stock into the boot of the car, it seems natural to go to the pub. It s full of other market people as well as locals and a tourist or two. We... [Pg.309]

In this chapter, we review fishing history and climate effects on cod, sprat, and herring stocks considering effects of the fishery and physical environment on stock development and the reproductive success, recruitment, and growth. Finally, the potential for the recovery of the eastern Baltic cod stock and the benefits of a more balanced ecosystem are discussed. [Pg.572]

To manufacture mustard gas, the French and British had to build specialist chemical plants, and, in these plants, production proved extremely slow and hazardous. At Roussillon, the main French plant, which supplied three-quarters of the Allied-fired mustard gas, conditions were unpleasant and hazardous. Some 90 per cent of the workforce were voiceless and about 50 per cent coughed continuously. Conjunctivitis was almost universal, and most employees suffered from red, peeling skin which was intensely itchy and rendered sleep nearly impossible . At the main British plant in Avonmouth, the Medical Officer reported over 1400 illnesses directly attributable to the work among a work force of 1100. In a period of six months, there were 160 accidents and over 1000 burns. Despite these risks, it still took nearly a year before the French received any battlefield supplies of mustard gas, while the British had to wait for another three months before her stocks arrived. [Pg.27]

For the past year Strike had been in consultation with contract labs over the making of phenylisopropyl alcohols using sulfuric acid and allylbenzenes (don t ask). The lab owners would listen patiently as Strike primitively described how and why an OH should go on the beta carbon. And without exception, the lab owners would point out to Strike that the best way to get an OH on the beta carbon would be to put a Br there first. But Strike don t wanna put a Br there first Strike would say, Strike wants the OH put on directly using sulfuric acid " The lab guys had to do what Strike said because Strike was holding all the money (...a fool and her money etc.). But out of curiosity Strike asked how they would get that Br on the beta carbon. Every one of them said it was simply a matter of using the 48% HBr in acetic acid. They even showed Strike their stock solutions (usually from Aldrich or Fisher). [Pg.144]

An agricuiturai chemist wished to study the effect of varying fertilizer applications on the growth of tomato piants. The chemist prepared a stock aqueous solution of urea, (NH2)2 CO, by dissolving 1.75 g of this compound in water to make 1.00 L of solution. Then she prepared a series of more dilute solutions to apply to her tomato plants. One of these solutions contained 5.00 mL of stock solution diluted to give a final volume of 25.00 mL. What was the concentration of urea in this diluted solution ... [Pg.179]

I. G. Farben first subdued nature in ten thousand ways, then shipped the marvelous products of that victory across the seven seas. Its business has touched the life of every man and woman in the world. Often an unrecognized guest, it has visited every American home, with dyes, plastics, fabrics. If Farben did not make your bathroom fixtures, your shaving mug, or even your razor, your wife surely owes much of her prettification — from Easter hat to synthetic stockings — to I. G. Farben. [Pg.6]

My mother works at Macy s, cleaning the rest rooms and straightening up the stock after the store closes. It is not an easy job, she does it from 12 midnight til d in the morning. My mother wanted to go to college, but her parents didn t have no money. She really want us to all go. I would love to make her proud of myself That would be a great reward to her for all she did for us. [Pg.167]

Her hostess headed straight for a shuttered closet and Trix thought she might be about to mix up a perky little cocktail from the drinks cabinet -to celebrate her acquisition of the locket, maybe. But as Aphrodite swung open the shutters, Trix had to stop her jaw from hitting the carpet. It was heart-stopping way better than the best-stocked jewellery drawer. [Pg.82]

Variations in the biochemistry and physiology of fish from one year to another must be accepted as real. Such a cycle would be linked to long-term changes in the climate resulting from solar activity (Chizhevsky, 1976). The trouble is that observations are insufficiently representative to yield clear patterns. As with diurnal variation, much of the published work relates to terrestrial organisms rather than fish, and much of the study has centred on fluctuations in the abundance of species which tend to develop outbreaks - sudden marked increases in numbers. However, fish such as salmon, cod, herring, sardines and other species have also been shown to exhibit long-term fluctuations in their numbers. Klyashtorin (1996) has found a close correlation between the velocity of rotation of the earth, which affects the intensity of circulation of the water in the oceans, and the abundance of stocks of many species of fish. [Pg.118]
