Hermaphrodite Hermaphroditical products

Female sexual development and behaviour in mammals occurs by default and requires no ovarian secretion, and it is only in genetic males that the testis can secrete hormones which destroy this female pattern and superimpose that of the male. Sexual differentiation is not so well defined in fish, and larval exposure to both synthetic estrogens and androgens is widely used in aquaculture to produce monosex cultures. Endocrine disruption of sexual differentiation in fish may therefore reflect both the complexity and diversity of such processes between different species. Some care is required in use of the terms hermaphrodite and sex-reversal since a true hermaphrodite has both functional testes and ovaries and a sex-reversed fish is fully functional as its final sex—both produce the appropriate viable gametes. Such functional sex-reversal is not possible in mammals, but in some species of fish it is the normal developmental pattern. In most of the cases of hermaphroditism or sex-reversal reported in the non-scientific press, there is evidence only for a few ovarian follicles within a functional testis. This may be considered as feminisation or a form of intersex, and is very clearly endocrine disruption, but it is certainly neither sex-reversal nor hermaphroditism. In some cases the terms have even been used to infer induction of a single female characteristic such as production of yolk-protein by males. [Pg.41]

To this the chancellor responds with a doubtful rhetoric, calling the demonic offspring of Spirit and Nature (that is, the alchemical product—or potential gold) an impossible, misshapen hermaphrodite, an in-between being ... [Pg.132]

Egg production in trematodes puts a heavy demand on the parasite for nutrients. Female 5. mansoni worms ingest ten times more red blood corpuscles (330,000/h) than males in order to produce the estimated 100-200 eggs/day/female (Loker, 1983). Schistosoma japonicum females are even more prodigious producing 500-2000 eggs/day (Loker, 1983 Fan and Kang, 2003). The hermaphroditic adult liver fluke, on the other hand, consumes 0.03 ml of blood (approximately 350 x 106 red blood cells)/h and produces from 20,000 to 50,000 eggs/day (Whitfield, 1979 Andrews, 1999 Dalton et ah, 2004). [Pg.352]

Marijuana plants are often hermaphrodites. Male flowers will frequently sprout forth on female plants, particularly under adverse conditions, and strains are known in which nearly every plant contains both sexes. Such monoecious strains have been specially developed for fiber production because they yield a uniform crop which matures simultaneously (the males of dice-, cious strains usually die about one month earlier than females). The monoecious strains contain little THC even hermaphrodites from mostly dioecious strains are of the low THC, high CBD variety (see tables 4 and 5). It seems that it should be possible to develop high THC monoecious strains as well. One monoecious female Thai plant had 2.5% THC and 0.3% CBD, while a male of the same strain had 2.1 and 0.4%, respectively. [Pg.58]

The selection of superior clones of V. amurensis promoted commercial planting on a large scale. Since the discovery of superior hermaphroditic V. amurensis, higher yields and more stable production have been achieved. By using perfect flowered parents, breeding hermaphroditic V. amurensis hybrids/new cultivars became possible. [Pg.285]
